Line 1 Kit

Line 1 Load: The survival load carried on your person. The bare minimums to protect your core body temperature and ensure hydration until you can be rescued or self rescue.

I wanted to design a simple, compact and durable kit that I could carry easily with me regardless of how I’m equipping myself. This kit fits great in a small compass style pouch on the belt or on my Bush Hunter or Buffalo Scout knife sheaths, and it also fits great stored in a kit bag or chest rig.

Fire and Water: The Essentials of Survival

No fire. No water. No survival.

When you’re deep in the backcountry or behind enemy lines, staying alive comes down to the essentials. The Line 1 Survival Kit includes a high-grade ferro rod, fat wood and Tinder-Quik tabs, ensuring you can start a fire in any condition—wet, cold, or windblown.

For hydration, the 4 chlorine dioxide tablets and 1 liter high temp Wazoo emergency reservoir let you purify water on the move, turning even questionable sources into a lifeline. The water bag is made from a special polymer that resists heat up to 400F so you can actually boil water in it if needed. Whether you’re hunting in rugged terrain or operating in hostile environments, this kit delivers the two things you can’t live without—fire and water.

The kit also comes with 18” of vinyl tubing. This is a versatile tool whether you use it to drink water from the water bag or use it as a blow tube to help get a fire going. I’ve carried a piece in my kit for years and it’s came in handy many times.

The kit comes in a steel “Altoids” style tin that I’ve laser engraved with a custom topo map design. The interior of the tin is polished like a mirror making it great for a signal mirror. The tin itself can also be used to char fire making materials.

The lid is secured with a heavy duty Ranger band which is useful for a variety of things from holding the water bag shut to using as a fire starter. After packing the kit I recommend sealing the lid with electrical tape (which can be used to get a fire going) to water proof it.

The tin has additional room so that you can customize it further for your specific needs. Items you could add are things like one of my Solar Compass patches, a mini Bic, a button compass, cordage, a sail needle, fresnel lens..
