As of 7/1/25 I will now be switching to Pop’s Pro Cut Steel, a new hybrid carbon steel from Dr. Larrin Thomas. With its tight grain structure and Tungsten carbides this steel produces a knife that has edge retention and toughness as good as DET annealed 52100 (which is a superb steel for hard use field knives) with a less time consuming heat treat. It’s a fantastic knife steel designed for high performance knives and I’m very excited to switch to it. I’ll also be switching to 1/8” thick steel instead of 5/32”. In all the testing I’ve done I can’t find any reason to produce knives of this size in any thicker steel, it’s just extra added weight for the end user to carry. Lower quality steel “survival” knives might need 3/16” or 1/4” steel to survive field use but finer grain high quality steels do not.
